What fits in a 10-yard dumpster?
A 10-yard dumpster holds about 3 to 4 pickup truck loads of debris, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level. It is built for concrete, dirt, or a small bathroom remodel. These typical projects fit the 10-yard:
- A one-bathroom gut: tile, tub, vanity and drywall
- Broken concrete from a small patio or walkway, loaded halfway
- Dirt or sand from a garden regrade, loaded halfway
- One or two rooms of household junk
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Your amount of debris decides.
Will a 10-yard dumpster go over 2 tons?
A 10-yard dumpster goes over 2 tons fast with heavy debris. Solid concrete typically weighs about 4,000 lb per cubic yard, so one cubic yard is about 2 tons, the whole allowance. That is why heavy loads stop halfway up the walls and are quoted on clean-fill pricing.
Worked example: your 10-yard includes 2 tons. The landfill scale ticket shows 2.4 tons net. You pay for 0.4 tons at $75 per ton.
Weights in examples are illustrations; check your own shingle bundle wrapper and the scale ticket.
Will a 10-yard dumpster fit my driveway?
A 10-yard dumpster needs a clear, level spot 12 ft long and 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
Street placement and HOA rules are covered in dumpster placement and driveway care.
Too small or too big?
Guessing too small costs more than guessing too big. An overfilled 10-yard can't travel, and a swap counts as a full new rental. Going one size up costs less than a second haul when the debris is light. Compare the sizes on either side:
- 15-yard: 16 ft long, about 5 to 6 pickup loads, 2.5 tons included. Pick it if your light debris could top 4 loads.
See every size together in the dumpster size guide.
How your final bill is worked out
Your 10-yard bill is the quoted rental plus only two possible extras: weight over 2 tons at $75 per ton, and days past 7 at $25 each. The certified scale ticket comes with the final invoice.
Read the full method in how dumpster weight is billed, or see every possible charge in the dumpster rental cost guide.
What can't go in the dumpster
The 10-yard dumpster takes household junk, furniture, construction and remodel debris, concrete and dirt (half full) and yard waste. Chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed. Mattresses, tires and Freon appliances are $50 each.
Not allowed
- Hazardous chemicals (solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals)
- Wet paint
- Batteries of any kind
Allowed for $50 each
- Refrigerators, freezers and AC units with Freon
- Mattresses
- Automotive tires

10-yard dumpster questions
How much does a 10-yard dumpster hold?
A 10-yard dumpster holds 10 cubic yards, about 3 to 4 pickup truck loads. It is 12 ft long, 8 ft wide and 3.5 ft high and includes 2 tons of debris. Heavy debris such as concrete may only fill it halfway.
Can I put concrete in a 10-yard dumpster?
Concrete goes in a 10-yard dumpster when it fills no more than halfway up the walls. Keep the load clean, meaning concrete only with no trash or wood, to qualify for clean-fill pricing. Mixed loads are billed by weight at the standard rate.
Is a 10-yard dumpster big enough for a bathroom remodel?
A 10-yard dumpster fits most single-bathroom remodels, including tile, a tub, a vanity and drywall. Tile and plaster are heavy, so watch the 2-ton limit. Two bathrooms at once usually need a 15-yard.
Will a 10-yard dumpster fit in my driveway?
A 10-yard dumpster fits most single-car driveways. The container is 12 ft long and 8 ft wide. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and 23 ft of overhead clearance to set it down.
