Front-load dumpster sizes for businesses
Front-load dumpsters come in 2, 4, 6 and 8 yards. All four are about 6 ft long; they get deeper and taller as they grow. The 2-yard holds about 24 trash bags (400 lb), the 4-yard about 48 bags, the 6-yard about 72 and the 8-yard about 96 bags (1,600 lb).
| Size | About L × W × H | Holds | Weight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2-yard | 6 × 3 × 3 ft | About 24 bags | About 400 lb | Small offices and boutiques |
| 4-yard | 6 × 3 × 4 ft | About 48 bags | About 800 lb | Convenience stores and mid-size restaurants |
| 6-yard | 6 × 5 × 6 ft | About 72 bags | About 1,200 lb | Hotels and large offices |
| 8-yard | 6 × 6 × 7 ft | About 96 bags | About 1,600 lb | Grocery stores and universities |
Which front-load size does my business need?
Pick the front-load size by counting the trash bags your business fills between pickups. If a restaurant fills about 40 bags between pickups, the 4-yard (about 48 bags) fits with room to spare. A small office filling 15 to 20 bags fits the 2-yard. Grow the bin or the pickup schedule, whichever costs less.
| Business | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Small office, boutique | 2-yard |
| Convenience store, mid-size restaurant | 4-yard |
| Hotel, large office | 6-yard |
| Grocery store, university building | 8-yard |
Front-load vs roll-off: what's the difference?
A front-load dumpster stays at your business and is emptied into the truck on a schedule. A roll-off is a 10 to 40-yard open box delivered for one project, then hauled away whole and weighed at the landfill. Businesses use front-load bins for daily trash and roll-offs for remodels and clean-outs.
One-time project? See the 40-yard dumpster for major demolitions or the construction dumpster page.
Where does a front-load dumpster go?
A front-load dumpster sits on a firm, level surface, usually a concrete pad or a trash enclosure, where the truck can drive straight up to it. Keep the approach clear of parked cars and low overhangs on pickup days, because the truck lifts the bin over its cab.

Can you service my business location?
Some cities route commercial trash collection through one franchise hauler. Sugar Land's commercial franchise belongs to Republic Services, Pasadena names Waste Management as its designated commercial provider, and Missouri City runs commercial service through an agreement with GFL. Call with your business address and we will tell you plainly whether we can serve it.

What can't go in a commercial dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed in our dumpsters, front-load or roll-off. Bagged everyday trash, packaging and food waste from normal operations go in. Large one-time loads, such as old fixtures from a remodel, belong in a roll-off.

Commercial dumpster questions
What is a front-load dumpster?
A front-load dumpster is a 2 to 8-yard bin that stays at your business. A front-load truck lifts it with forks over the cab, empties it and sets it back down on a regular schedule, so it never leaves your lot.
How many trash bags fit in a front-load dumpster?
A 2-yard front-load dumpster holds about 24 standard trash bags, a 4-yard about 48, a 6-yard about 72 and an 8-yard about 96. Count the bags you fill between pickups and pick the size just above it.
How often is a commercial dumpster emptied?
Your pickup schedule is set when you sign up, based on how much trash your business makes between pickups. The schedule is written on your quote, and you can call to talk through a change in volume.
Should my business use a front-load or a roll-off?
Use a front-load dumpster for everyday trash that never stops, such as a store, office or restaurant. Use a roll-off for a one-time project such as a remodel, cleanout or build-out, where a 20 to 40-yard box is hauled away full.
