What fits in a 40-yard dumpster?
A 40-yard dumpster holds about 12 to 16 pickup truck loads of debris, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level. It is built for major demolitions, new construction and large commercial projects. These typical projects fit the 40-yard:
- Whole-building interior demolition or a gut renovation
- Framing scrap, packaging and drywall from a new home build
- Large commercial clean-outs and tenant build-outs
- Big estate or warehouse clean-outs with bulky furniture and shelving
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Your amount of debris decides.
How much weight does a 40-yard dumpster hold?
A 40-yard dumpster holds 5 to 6 tons, which is 10,000 to 12,000 lb. Bulky, light debris such as framing scrap, packaging and furniture fills the 40 yards before it reaches that. Plaster, wet drywall and roofing are heavy; concrete, dirt and brick are not allowed in this size.
Worked example: if your quote includes 5 tons and the landfill scale ticket shows 5.8 tons net, you pay for 0.8 tons (1,600 lb) at $75 per ton: $60.00. Your quote states the exact included tons for your load.
Weights in examples are illustrations; check your own shingle bundle wrapper and the scale ticket.
Will a 40-yard dumpster fit my driveway?
A 40-yard dumpster needs a clear, level spot 22 ft long and 7.5 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
Street placement and HOA rules are covered in dumpster placement and driveway care.
Too small or too big?
Guessing too small costs more than guessing too big. An overfilled 40-yard can't travel, and a swap counts as a full new rental. Going one size up costs less than a second haul when the debris is light. Compare the sizes on either side:
- 30-yard: 22 ft long, about 10 to 13 pickup loads, 4 tons included. Pick it if your debris fits in 13 pickup loads or fewer.
See every size together in the dumpster size guide.
How your final bill is worked out
Your 40-yard bill is the quoted rental plus only two possible extras: weight over 5 to 6 tons at $75 per ton, and days past 7 at $25 each. The certified scale ticket comes with the final invoice.

What can't go in the dumpster
The 40-yard dumpster takes household junk, furniture, construction and remodel debris and yard waste. Chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed. Mattresses, tires and Freon appliances are $50 each.
Not allowed
- Hazardous chemicals (solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals)
- Wet paint
- Batteries of any kind
Allowed for $50 each
- Refrigerators, freezers and AC units with Freon

40-yard dumpster questions
How big is a 40-yard dumpster?
A 40-yard dumpster is about 22 ft long, 7.5 ft wide and 8 ft high, and it holds 40 cubic yards: about 12 to 16 pickup truck loads. It is the largest roll-off we rent.
How much weight can go in a 40-yard dumpster?
A 40-yard dumpster holds 5 to 6 tons, or 10,000 to 12,000 lb. Weight over the tons on your quote is billed at $75 per ton, by the exact pound from the landfill scale ticket.
Does a 40-yard dumpster fit in a driveway?
A 40-yard dumpster has the same 22-ft length as the 20 and 30-yard, and it is 7.5 ft wide, so it fits most driveways that fit a 20-yard. Its 8-ft walls are too high to load by hand over the side; use the rear door or a loader.
When should I choose a 40-yard over a 30-yard?
Choose a 40-yard when light, bulky debris would top 13 pickup loads: a whole-building gut, a new build or a large commercial clean-out. For heavy debris, a bigger box does not help; heavy loads go in a 10 or 15-yard.
