What fits in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster holds about 7 to 9 pickup truck loads of debris, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level. It is built for whole-house decluttering or a kitchen remodel. These typical projects fit the 20-yard:

  • A kitchen remodel: cabinets, counters, flooring and drywall
  • A whole-house declutter before a move or sale
  • A single-layer asphalt roof up to about 25 squares
  • Flooring and drywall from 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft

Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Your amount of debris decides.

Will a 20-yard dumpster hold my roof?

A 20-yard dumpster holds most single-layer roofs up to about 25 squares within its 3 tons. If your shingles weigh 80 lb per bundle and a square takes 3 bundles, one square weighs 240 lb. 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb, or 3.0 tons.

Worked example: your 20-yard includes 3 tons. The landfill scale ticket shows 3.6 tons net. You pay for 0.6 tons at $75 per ton.

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit my driveway?

A 20-yard dumpster needs a clear, level spot 22 ft long and 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.

Street placement and HOA rules are covered in dumpster placement and driveway care.

Too small or too big?

Guessing too small costs more than guessing too big. An overfilled 20-yard can't travel, and a swap counts as a full new rental. Going one size up costs less than a second haul when the debris is light. Compare the sizes on either side:

  • 15-yard: 16 ft long, about 5 to 6 pickup loads, 2.5 tons included. Pick it if your debris fits in 6 pickup loads or fewer.
  • 30-yard: 22 ft long, about 10 to 13 pickup loads, 4 tons included. Pick it if your light debris could top 9 loads.

See every size together in the dumpster size guide.

20-yard dumpster questions

How much does a 20-yard dumpster hold?

A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards, about 7 to 9 pickup truck loads. It is 22 ft long, 8 ft wide and 4 ft high and includes 3 tons and 7 days.

How many squares of shingles fit in a 20-yard dumpster?

A 20-yard dumpster fits about 20 to 25 squares of one layer of asphalt shingles within its 3 included tons. Two layers double the weight, so a two-layer roof of that size usually needs a 30-yard or a swap. Check your bundle weight on the wrapper.

Can I put concrete in a 20-yard dumpster?

Concrete, dirt, brick and sand are not allowed in the 20-yard dumpster. A load that heavy would exceed highway legal weight. Heavy debris goes in a 10 or 15-yard, loaded halfway.

Does a 20-yard dumpster fit in a standard driveway?

A 20-yard dumpster fits most two-car driveways. The container is 22 ft long and 8 ft wide, so measure a clear 22-ft run. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and 23 ft of overhead clearance.
