What fits in a 15-yard dumpster?
A 15-yard dumpster holds about 5 to 6 pickup truck loads of debris, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level. It is built for garage cleanouts and small roof replacements. These typical projects fit the 15-yard:
- A two-car garage cleanout
- A small roof replacement, up to about 15 squares of one layer
- Two bathrooms or a small kitchen gut
- Concrete, dirt or brick, loaded no higher than halfway
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Your amount of debris decides.
How many roof squares fit a 15-yard dumpster?
A 15-yard dumpster suits roofs up to about 15 squares of one shingle layer. If a square weighs 240 lb, 15 squares weigh about 3,600 lb, or 1.8 tons, which leaves room inside the 2.5 included tons for felt, nails and old decking. Use your own bundle weight to check.
Worked example: your 15-yard includes 2.5 tons. The landfill scale ticket shows 2.9 tons net. You pay for 0.4 tons at $75 per ton.
Weights in examples are illustrations; check your own shingle bundle wrapper and the scale ticket.
Will a 15-yard dumpster fit my driveway?
A 15-yard dumpster needs a clear, level spot 16 ft long and 7.5 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
Street placement and HOA rules are covered in dumpster placement and driveway care.
Too small or too big?
Guessing too small costs more than guessing too big. An overfilled 15-yard can't travel, and a swap counts as a full new rental. Going one size up costs less than a second haul when the debris is light. Compare the sizes on either side:
- 10-yard: 12 ft long, about 3 to 4 pickup loads, 2 tons included. Pick it if your debris fits in 4 pickup loads or fewer.
- 20-yard: 22 ft long, about 7 to 9 pickup loads, 3 tons included. Pick it if your light debris could top 6 loads.
See every size together in the dumpster size guide.
How your final bill is worked out
Your 15-yard bill is the quoted rental plus only two possible extras: weight over 2.5 tons at $75 per ton, and days past 7 at $25 each. The certified scale ticket comes with the final invoice.

15-yard dumpster questions
How much does a 15-yard dumpster hold?
A 15-yard dumpster holds 15 cubic yards, about 5 to 6 pickup truck loads. It measures 16 ft long, 7.5 ft wide and 4.5 ft high, and includes 2.5 tons of debris and 7 days.
Is a 15-yard dumpster big enough for a garage cleanout?
A 15-yard dumpster fits most two-car garage cleanouts with boxes, old furniture, shelving and yard tools. A packed three-car garage, or a garage plus an attic, usually needs a 20-yard.
Can a 15-yard dumpster take dirt or concrete?
The 15-yard dumpster takes dirt, concrete, brick and sand up to the halfway line on the walls. It is the largest size we allow for heavy debris. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for clean-fill pricing.
What is the difference between a 15 and 20-yard dumpster?
The 20-yard dumpster is 6 ft longer and holds about 2 more pickup loads than the 15-yard, and it includes 3 tons instead of 2.5. The 15-yard is shorter for tight driveways and is the bigger of the two sizes allowed for heavy debris.
