Guide

How to Load a Dumpster

Load heavy, flat debris first across the floor, then bulky items, then fill the gaps with small pieces. Stop level with the top rim; heavy debris stops at halfway. An overfilled dumpster can't travel, and a $125 dry-run fee applies.

What is the best way to load a dumpster?

Load heavy, flat items first and spread them across the floor, then add bulky items, and fill the gaps with small debris. Break furniture apart and cut limbs short. Keep the weight even from front to back so the truck can lift the container safely.

  1. Walk heavy debris in through the rear door and lay it flat.
  2. Stack flat items such as drywall and doors against the walls.
  3. Break down furniture and cabinets.
  4. Fill gaps with bags and small pieces.
  5. Finish level with the top rim.

How full can I fill a dumpster?

Fill the dumpster level with the top rim and no higher. Texas law requires loads to be secured, so an overfilled dumpster can't go on the road. If it is overfilled, a $125 dry-run fee applies and the excess has to come out before transport. Heavy debris stops at halfway.

Law: Texas Transportation Code §725.021.

How do I keep the weight down while loading?

Keep the dumpster covered so rain doesn't add weight, keep heavy debris in a separate small box, and stop neighbors from adding to it. Wet drywall and carpet weigh far more than dry, and every pound over your included tons is billed at $75 per ton.

Should I use the rear door?

Use the rear door for heavy items you would otherwise lift over the wall, such as appliances or a couch. Close and latch it before loading higher than the door. Leave the door clear when you finish so the driver can check the load.

Questions renters ask

Can I load the dumpster above the rim if I tarp it?

A tarp does not make an overfilled dumpster legal to haul. Debris must stay level with the rim, or the driver can't take it and a $125 dry-run fee applies.

Can I climb into the dumpster to pack it down?

Climbing into a dumpster is a common cause of injuries from sharp debris and shifting loads. Break items down outside and walk them in through the rear door instead.

Should I put bags or loose debris in first?

Loose, flat, heavy debris goes in first, bags last. Bags fill gaps between bulky pieces and keep the top level.

What if I fill the dumpster before I'm done?

Call for a swap: we pull the full dumpster and drop an empty one. Each swap is a new standard rental with its own 7 days and included tons.
